John 18:25–27
Heard Any Roosters Lately?
I have some chickens. In town. I love chickens — well, most of them. I’ve got one that’s been renamed Dumpling, and not in a good way.
The city won’t allow roosters, so I’ve heard. I might need to test that one day. Not today though.
As a follower of Jesus, you would think that the most exciting thing to do is to be identified with him. To be able to stand up and say “I’m with him!” To step right up beside him and acknowledge him as Lord of our lives. But do we? How about when we are in a strange place, with a strange crowd? How about when someone challenges our relationship with him? How about when we are asked what we believe, stand for, how we arrange our lives? How about when we are in the presence of someone who has power over us, more money than us, more prestige, more fame? How about when the crowd is hostile to him — and therefore to us?
So Peter denied him. His beloved disciple. His follower through thick and thin. The one who raised his sword and chopped off an ear. Three times he denied knowing him. Three.
Check yourself… how many times have you — have we — done the very same thing?
Jesus tells us that if we deny him before man, he will deny us before the Father. I think he means it.
Heard any roosters crow lately?
Love, Pam
